Troubleshooting Game Performance & Technical Issues

When students experience lag, freezing, slow responses, or connection problems during live Blooket sessions, it’s often due to device limitations, browser settings, or network conditions. This guide helps you diagnose and resolve performance issues, keep class sessions running smoothly, and ensure every student can participate.

1. Close Other Browser Tabs/Windows

Ask students to close all other tabs. Even static ones (like Gmail or Slides) consume background memory and CPU, impacting performance.

2. Plug Your Device In: Battery & Power Performance (20% Rule)

Many browsers like Google Chrome automatically switch to Energy Saver mode below ~20% battery, which can throttle performance:

  • This can reduce animation frame rate, delay inputs, and slow gameplay responsiveness.
  • Encourage students to plug in before hitting 20%.
  • In Chrome, click the leaf icon in the address bar to turn off Energy Saver as a temporary fix if a charger is not available or portable.
  • In system power settings, choose Best Performance rather than battery saving options.

3. Try Incognito / Private Mode (if available)

Browser extensions (ad blockers, grammar checkers, etc.) can run scripts on every page and slow things down.

  • Open Blooket in Incognito/Private mode to disable extensions temporarily and improve performance.

4. Clear Browser Cache (Images & Files)

Sometimes old cached files can interfere with loading and smooth gameplay:

  • In your browser press Ctrl + Shift + Delete
  • Clear cached images and files only (no need to clear passwords)

5. Ensure Hardware Acceleration Is Enabled

Hardware acceleration lets your browser use your device’s graphics processor (GPU) instead of relying entirely on the CPU, which can improve performance in resource-intensive games.

Google Chrome

  1. Open Chrome.

  2. In the address bar, type: chrome://settings/system and press Enter.

  3. Find Use hardware acceleration when available and make sure it is ON.

  4. Restart the browser to apply the change.

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Edge.

  2. Click the three dots (⋯) in the upper right and select Settings.

  3. Choose System and performance on the left.

  4. Toggle Use hardware acceleration when available to ON.

  5. Restart Edge to apply the change.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Firefox.

  2. Click the menu icon (☰) in the upper right and select Settings.

  3. Scroll down to the Performance section.

  4. Uncheck Use recommended performance settings.

  5. Check Use hardware acceleration when available.

  6. Restart Firefox to apply the change.

Safari

Safari on macOS enables hardware acceleration automatically, and it cannot be turned on or off manually.

Tip: After adjusting hardware acceleration, always restart the browser so the changes take effect. If performance issues persist, try combining this with other optimizations in this article (incognito mode, limiting open tabs, energy/battery settings, etc.).

On very old or failing hardware this might not help, but it’s the recommended setting for most devices.

Test Your Connection with the Debug Page

If lag seems related to connection or loading issues, direct students (and IT staff if needed) to:

This page runs a series of tests to make sure your device and network can load images and game resources properly. If a test fails, it can point your support team toward firewall or network issues that might be blocking essential services.

Choose Appropriate Game Modes

Not all Blooket games demand the same level of device performance. Some are lighter and work well on older machines, while others use more animations and physics:

Lower-Performance Friendly Modes

Good for older or mixed classroom devices:

  • Classic
  • Gold Quest
  • Racing
  • Fishing Frenzy

More Resource-Intensive Modes

Best on newer, faster hardware:

  • Tower Defense 2
  • Monster Brawl
  • Star Grazer
  • Zorblitz

Device-Specific Tips

If the tips above are still insufficient, consider these device-specific and hardware tips.

Chromebooks

  • Hard restart: Press the Refresh (⟳) + Power buttons together.
  • Ensure ChromeOS is fully updated to get the latest performance and graphics improvements.

Windows & Mac

  • Close resource-intensive apps like other games, Teams, Spotify, or Zoom.
  • If the device feels hot and the fan is loud, it may be throttling itself. We recommend placing it on a flat, open surface for better airflow (laps, high-pile carpet, etc. can suffocate the computer’s fans).

Network & Classroom Setup

  • Have students join games in small waves instead of all at once (e.g., by row or group) to reduce bandwidth spikes.
  • If school networks block services like firebase or SSL traffic inspection, ask IT to whitelist .blooket.com so game data isn’t slowed or blocked.
